I'm a Postdoctoral Scholar in Education at the University of California Irvine. I received my Ph.D. in Education from UC Irvine and my M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from California State University, Los Angeles. I have four years experience teaching high school English as a Second Language to multilingual students, including at a New Arrivals Center in which I taught sheltered math and science to newcomers. I also have experience teaching MA in TESOL students Methods for Teaching Second Languages as instructor of record at Cal State LA.
My research interests are interdisciplinary, bringing theory from the learning sciences, computer science education, and applied linguistics to to examine the linguistic and sociocultural processes that help multilingual students succeed in mastering computational thinking. I am currently a graduate student researcher on Elementary Computing for All: ECforAll a National Science Foundation Computer Science for All and US Department of Education initiative designed to promote computational thinking for multilingual upper elementary students. In addition to my teaching and research activities, I have been selected as a 2019/2020 Cal State University Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive Program (CDIP) Fellow. This program provides financial support, professional development, and mentorship to promising doctoral students who are interested in becoming CSU faculty. In 2021, I was recognized as a UCI Public Impact Distinguished Fellow for my commitment to bringing actionable change for multilingual students in computing. Most recently, I was awarded the 2021 Haynes Lindley Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship in support of my dissertation research. This award recognizes “well-conceived and imaginative research into the pressing economic, social, policy, or political issues that impact the five counties of Southern California.” |
